Since the election started all that we have been hearing from the conservatives is how vital it is that every canadian should vote conservative because they are the only party who can get this country out of a deficit, and if we dont give them their majority we will all be doomed to eternal poverty and evil coalition governments. What really bothered me was the attack ads saying that Mr ignatieff is not canadian because he was educated in the United states, its disgusting to see the conservatives adopting american style fear tactics to try to win elections. What concerns me the most about this government is their attitude towards the democratic deficit that seems to be worse under the Harper regime than any other time in politcs and their indifference towards it. Think about this governments priorities in the last 5 years, have their actions been for the good of canadians or have they been for their own self serving needs? Think about the prorogations, the G20, the afghan detainee documents, their unwillingness to be honest about some major decisions and the costs associated with them, the election fraud, the doctoring of documents, the firing of people who dared speak up against the government, hiring known criminals. Remember that this was the government that campaigned and who were voted in on the promise of more accountability and transparency. Another great example of the contempt that Mr Harper has for canadians is the two girls who wanted to see Mr Harper speak at one of his rallies, and who were rudely ejected because of a facebook picture taken with Mr Ignatieff, pretty scary stuff when a political party demands 100% allegiance or they will embarass you and alienate you completely. This kind of behaviour tells me Mr Harpers' view is," if you are not with me then you are against me", and someone like that is dangerous especially with a majority. I don't think we should expect perfection from any of the parties, if we think that way we will always be disappointed but what we should expect at the very least from our government is accountability for their mistakes and that's one thing that has been sorely lacking from the conservative party these past 5 years. You can clearly see this with their attitude towards being found in contempt of parlament, when statements like "you win some, you loose some" are made by a prime minister who campaigned on accountability, and then following that statement with "Canadians don't care about this sort of thing". I do care about my government being honest and accountable because without those two basic ideas how can i possibly believe them on any choices that i elected them to make on my behalf, wether it be voting on bills democratically or the cost of certain bills that will affect my taxes. eliminating the Democratic deficit is just as important as controlling the deficit and is intimitely intertwined in all decisions made in the house of commons.
