Congratulations to Thomas Mulcair

The New Democratic Party's leadership race is over. The membership have spoken and elected Thomas Mulcair as the next leader. Mulcair's main challenge is to defeat Stephen Harper in the next election and position the NDP to form a new government. He must build on the NDP's 2011 electoral success by holding on to Quebec and expanding support in the rest of Canada.

Mulcair brings a number of strengths to Stornaway and Parliament Hill:

Robocalling: One way to produce an "enemies" list

By Gary Shaul

I've been working on some research into the voter suppression phone call scandal in which voters were misdirected to non-existent polling stations. I hope to have some of the detailed results published on the weekend. I've looked at the Elections Canada financial records of 96 Conservative candidates (including most of those listed by the…

Cooperation: The Way the Left Has Been Winning in Vancouver Since 1980, An Endorsement of Nathan Cullen

An Open Letter from New Democrats Who Have Won Through Cooperation

Today, we are formally endorsing Nathan Cullen for leader of the NDP. His positions on the environment, employment and social justice make him the candidate who best reflects our values; and his wit and humour as a campaigner make him the person best able to fill Jack Layton’s shoes in bringing a positive, upbeat, yet hard-hitting message to Canadians.

Some…

Citizens for Cross-Party Cooperation

A group of us, mostly on Salt Spring Island, B.C., came together to form Citizens for Cross-Party Cooperation with the specific purpose of writing all NDP, Liberal, and Green MPs (copied to Bloc MPs) and their party executives, pushing them to consider alternative strategies for the next election.  Our letter, sent on February 15, 2012, proposes that these parties accept - prior to the next election - the possibility of forming a coalition government should their seat numbers warrant  it. …

Cooperation: Who's talking about it?

Yesterday, John Deverell, part of the Catch 22 campaign editorial team last year, published his opinion piece on our website yesterday - Why the opposition parties should co-operate in 2015. It is written with the backdrop of the NDP leadership campaign but puts special emphasis on the need for the Liberal Party to wake up and smell the coffee for the sake of its…

Suggestion

Dear Catch 22 team,

One suggestion I would make next time is to have a way for people to actually reach someone and communicate with them about how they can help.  I spent a lot of time going through the website, trying in vain to find a phone number or email address so I could talk to an actual person and find out how I could help in some way.  I live in a safe riding (Olivia Chow's), but I was prepared to canvass or make phone calls or…

Catch 22's first look at the election...

This is a high level summary of campaign results in ridings identified by the Catch 22 campaign. Over the coming weekend, we'll publish an editorial. Then in a few weeks we'll put out a more detailed look at our campaign - strengths and weaknesses, what worked and what didn't etc. Once that is done, the campaign will be wrapped up.

Obviously, we did not get the overall results we were looking for. With less than a 2% increase in the popular vote, Harper was successful at boosting his…

continuing post election

I am a lucky person this morning, we elected Elizabeth May in our riding.  However, I believe the huge work has just begun.  I sure hope the people who have worked on the Catch 22 campaign, and those who were all signed on, will continue to work to remove the despot at the top.

Help your local Catch 22 campaign "pull the vote" on Monday

While I've never run for public office, I have run for several union positions over the past 25 years. Having both won and lost elections by just a single vote, I can tell you how important every last vote can be. In the case where I lost, it was because of a mistake made by my scrutineer (yes, we're still friends).

We have to treat tomorrow's election as if every single vote could be the deciding vote between a minority and a phony majority…

pairvote

I have voted Green in the SGI, I am an NDP member so someone could vote stratecially in another riding where NDP needs to win.

With pairvote they say you must NOT have voted in the advance poll

Here, I think we can just agree on our own terms and confirm the trade.

If a Lib could win, then ok too but prefer NDP

question re:

Could you tell me what the optimum results could be obtained.  I would like to know what would be the Parties balance if the vote you recommand + those that already have good chances to be elected are all elected. I understand that your answer would not be a commitment but only an hypothesis.  Thank you for working on this important issue of defeating conservative party.

Merci beaucoup de votre super travail!

What Harper is doing

Harper has seen, in poll after poll, election after election, that after half a decade the majority 60-something% Canadians still oppose him.

But he wants to impose significant changes upon Canadians that he clearly knows that the majority of us do not want.

So what does he do? He turns to the remaining minority 30-something% and blatantly asks that minority to give him majority power over…
