Fundraising FAQ

How will the money be used?
We are fundraising in order to support our main objective - the production and distribution of professional literature to voters in target ridings before an election is called. We also need funds to support the central campaign - e.g. long distance calls, website costs, room rentals and (limited) travel as required.

How can I donate?

Paypal

Can I pay directly with a credit card?

Not directly. The "Donate" application that we're using only accepts PayPal (which can connect with your credit card and/or bank account).

What currency does Paypal accept?

As of April 3, all Paypal donations are in $Cdn.

Who is Allan Shaul? I noticed his name on the receipt.

(Allan) Gary Shaul is the campaign co-ordinator. His parents wanted to call him Gary but didn't want his name acronym to be GAS. For banking and registration with Elections Canada, his full proper name was required.

Does the Catch 22 campaign need to register with Elections Canada?

Because an election has been called, Catch 22 has submitted registration papers with Elections Canada to be a Third Party. This is a mandatory requirement for any group that wants to spend more than $500 advertising in a federal election. That is our intention.  Elections Canada regulates registrations, spending limits and accountability (through reporting) of Third Parties. The campaign was registered by Gary Shaul who is also serving as the financial agent.

Are there spending limits?

During an election campaign, Third Parties can spend up to $3,765 per riding or $188,250 in total on advertising.

Is the Catch 22 campaign incorporated?

No. We are an unregistered, non-profit, volunteer organization exercising our rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Who is in charge of the bank account?

Gary Shaul and Nick Fillmore from the Catch 22 central team have set up a chequing account with TD Canada Trust. All cheques require two signatures. .

Can I get a tax receipt for my donation?

No. Third Party campaign rules do not allow for tax receipts.

I'm not in Canada. Can I donate?

No. Third parties are prohibited from accepting donations from outside of Canada. We are currently working on limiting Paypal to donors in Canada only.

I'm a Canadian living outside the country. Can I donate?

We are inquiring with Elections Canada about this.

How has the campaign been funded?

We began fundraising in February 2011 after we were sure that we had a solid base. To date, we have spent about $1,500 on website charges, travel, long distance phone charges, printing and room rentals. We have neither solicited nor received any corporate, union or other organizational donations. We are asking all supporters to donate at least $22 to help us reach about 200 voters.

Are you using the Ning "Donate" app?

No. As of April 3rd, we have installed our own Paypal buttons which accepts money in $ Cdn. The Ning app only accepted US dollars. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused early donors to the campaign.
