Still not sure how to call this one - if lawn signs are any indication, it seems to be a three way race.  It is a a largely rural riding with several towns scattered throughout.  Significant older demographic.   Conservative incumbent is well known locally and his fans are loyal.  The liberal candidate is a well known municipal politician but he is likely to have ruffled many feathers in the county as he promised when he ran for mayor last year that he would not stand for the federal election if he won the Mayor's chair which he did.  Our NDP candidate got an early lead on campaigning and a local regional newspaper article touted him (Taras Natyshak) today following the all candidates debate.  I am hoping for an NDP win myself but I think whoever wins, it is going to be a squeaker.

Taras Natyshak, NDP, is running for the third time in Essex, and each time his vote has increased, whereas the vote for his opponents has decreased. He is running a very strong campaign and he and the incumbent Conservative candidate are probably tied for numbers of signs already placed, and the Liberal signs are relatively thinly placed.

Nelson Santos, Liberal, was mayor of Kingsville two years ago when he was nominated as MP Candidate. During the mayorial election last fall he at first was not going to run, so his deputy mayor ran, giving up a sure win as deputy mayor. Then he decided to run again as mayor and barely won. This caused a considerable resentment among his Kingsville constituents, and Kingsville and Harrow are the main regions for his support. He is much less well known in the other sections of the Essex riding, especially in the heavily populated northern parts, where Taras has his strength.

Jeff Watson, the Conservative incumbent, has annoyed a lot of his swing vote by picking fights with some mayorial and municipal council candidates last fall. Also his farm support has fallen down due to his inability to deliver on his promises to local farm groups. These are turning to Taras.

Admittedly, this will be a close race, but the NDP volunteer base has been the most inspired since the days when Pat Hayes was MPP and Steven Langdon was MP for this area. The party considers this to be a riding that can be won and has given the campaign some extra resources. There seems to be far less activity on the ground from the Liberal campaign.
