Democracy

It's Tuesday, May 3. My local MP, Linda Duncan, defeated her Conservative opponent by more than 6,000 votes (she won by less than 500 votes in 2008). That's good. Linda is an impressive MP and I wish her well.

On the other hand, Harper will lead a majority Conservative government. I hope I've misjudged the risk to Canada's democracy. I hope the Conservatives' fundamentalist capitalism leaves some room for listening, for compassion.

Thank-you to all who shared their views and their hopes on this forum. Now we need your hope and determination for a better Canada more than ever.

best regards,

Mark,

Hi Gary: Breakfast meetup at Albert's Restaurant at 12:30 EDT. Russ and I will eat & catch up (we haven't seen each other in a while) and then be ready for you to skype in at 10:30 MDT.

Would that be 12:30 EST? I will Skype in although I'd prefer if we could talk first and then you could plot and scheme. Let me know what works best.

Russ and I are going to meet at the Albert's restaurant in Bonnie Doon Mall Saturday, April 2, at 9:30 am MDT for breakfast. All Catch22ers are welcome.

Hey Team Catch22: If you are available for skype at 10:30 MDT, that would be great. I'll send my skype handle via private email to Gary.

Citizens of Edmonton-Strathcona Lead The Nation
Many Liberals in Edmonton-Strathcona already understand that their party’s national message is irrelevant in their situation. Some formed Liberals for Linda in 2008 to put the NDP’s Duncan over the top. They’re doing it again in 2011. The Greens in Edmonton Strathcona would do the entire nation a service by imitating the local Liberals.

If you would like to Skype or teleconference us into the meeting, someone from the central team would be glad to participate. catch22campaign@gmail.com

I see a new member in our group: Graham Oliver. Welcome, Graham.

A couple of us are going to meet Saturday; I think the practical purpose of the meeting will be for me to learn stuff from Russell, since he is the one person who indicated a time he can meet and I think he knows a lot more about elections than I do! Since it is just Russell and I, we will arrange the exact time & place in private communications. We will post the decision here, in case you, Graham, or others want to meet up too.

Agreed. I did some telephoning this evening at the campaign office, calling identified supporters from the last election. They all remain solidly behind Linda. Linda has a well-oiled machine but it's going to be important to reach every voter, and that means that the more people and the more time that can be put into Linda's campaign, the better.

A journalist reminded me of something she said after Linda took the riding in 2008: "Rahim didn't campaign," meaning he thought he didn't have to work to be re-elected and slacked off. Even so, Linda's margin of victory was less than 500 votes.

We're in Alberta, people, and Hastman is not going to slack off. Let's bring our best game!

The Conservative candidate, Ryan Hastman, made the federal news today: CBC Story

The ex tory staffer, Sebastien Togneri, who is under investigation by the RCMP, has been helping Ryan in the riding of Edmonton Strathcona.  I am not suggesting guilt by association, but I am disturbed that Ryan would not have better judgement than this.  Sebastien is described by Ryan as an old friend who just wanted to help out.  The right call by Ryan would have been: "Thanks but no thanks".  Apparently winning is more important than principles to Ryan.
