Democracy

It's Tuesday, May 3. My local MP, Linda Duncan, defeated her Conservative opponent by more than 6,000 votes (she won by less than 500 votes in 2008). That's good. Linda is an impressive MP and I wish her well.

On the other hand, Harper will lead a majority Conservative government. I hope I've misjudged the risk to Canada's democracy. I hope the Conservatives' fundamentalist capitalism leaves some room for listening, for compassion.

Thank-you to all who shared their views and their hopes on this forum. Now we need your hope and determination for a better Canada more than ever.

best regards,

Mark,

Harper says that an NDP-lead coalition would be "risky". I'll see his "risky" and raise him a "dangerous"... if Harper should get majority power. See why a Canadian constitutional expert fears a Harper majority would be the beginning of the end of democracy in our country.

Jacob,

Vote swapping is not within our mandate but votepair.ca is helping to facilitate that for voters who are interested.

Now that Edmonton Centre is part of the Catch 22 list, is there any chance we could organize a vote pair style vote swap between the two ridings? Is this within Catch 22's mandate?

I have been canvassing for Linda and there are two distinct group of people that I run into.  One group is aware of who Linda is and what she has to offer.  These people are very supportive.  The other group is totally unaware who the candidates are of any party.  These people often (not always) state an interest in supporting "The Conservative".

We need to stress to everyone that we meet who is in the first group that they should reach out to their neighbours and stress the importance to vote and to help out in any way.

We also need to point out to the Liberal supporters that a vote for the Liberal candidate may only give up a seat to Harper.  It will not go to Ignatieff.  In fact, the only hope for Ignatieff to come close to winning a minority is to pull out any Conservative seats that we can.  Edmonton Strathcona is one of those seats that will help to bring Harper down.

That poll I mentioned, found on Project Democracy, was done from Ekos & Nanos over the past week: http://www.projectdemocracy.ca/edmonton-strathcona

A recent poll of Edm-Strath notes more work is needed to convince Liberals that their vote would be best placed in Linda Duncan's candidacy.

Check out the classic NETWORK monologue by Peter Finch. A classic and it relates to this election. After the debates tonight, go outside and SHOUT OUT your feelings, get a friend to record them, listen to others shouting, "I'M MAD AS HELL AND AN NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY LONGER!" Post your videos on YouTube, here, or at http://www.facebook.com/NotHarper

I've been very encouraged as I've been canvassing that Linda's support exceeds that of people who support the NDP. Many self-identifying Liberals have said that she has worked hard for the constituency and deserves re-election. A number have agreed to have her sign on their lawn. While this campaign has a large base of volunteers, we can always use more. We need to identify as much of the support that is out there as we can so that we know who to remind on e-day to get out and vote.

Can you make a difference? There are many ways to volunteer a bit of time to help Linda Duncan keep her seat.

Hi everyone, I just joined this sub-group. I'm interested in volunteering for Linda's campaign, but out of province until Tuesday.

Excellent article by political reporter/pundit Graham Thomson; see link, just below. Exposes Con campaign weaknesses that Duncan supporters should exploit.
