"Let's not equate democracy with a Liberal government."

You obviously didn't read anything that Coivert posted about St. Amand typifying democratic values.

On the ground the Liberals are now getting signs up as their office opened on Saturday April 2nd. The NDP candidate is out-signing both the incumbent Conservative and challenger Lloyd St. Amand but these are early days and unlikely reflective of actual support. The NDP has been working very hard but they are up against it with the Liberal challenger being an experienced popular MP who is quite likely cabinet material. The Conservative incumbent is nothing but a yes man to Harper, the campaign office will not answer any questions and their candidate has nothing to say. The NDP candidate is relatively unknown, he did not run last time, and he has no experience. His efforts thus far have been commendable but the NDP era in Brant is in the distant past. Personally I am worried that the vote is going to be split due to the energy of the NDP. Four elections ago I worked for the NDP and it was a tightly run campaign and they had a very strong candidate, Lynn Bowering, but they still only achieved 11 000 votes which is about half of what's needed to win Brant. The hill has become too steep for the NDP.

Let's not equate democracy with a Liberal government. They are not the same thing.

Here is a link if you'd like to check the numbers for past elections yourselves. With all due respect to the NDP I strongly suggest that it is the Liberals who have the best chance of defeating the feckless Phil McColeman. The liberals need to pull awfully hard though, and they'll need the help of sympathetic others.

With the Harper regime making history by being the first government in both Canada and the Commonwealth to be guilty of Contempt for Parliament it became glaringly obvious that the Conservatives have a disdain for democracy that is poisonous. Harper has shown himself to be very much like Richard Nixon in how he views power, the hubris they share in common is the belief that their authority is above the law, above the people. The anti-dote to such toxicity, and we have it right here in Brantford, is integrity, honesty and respect. Lloyd St. Amand is a man who typifies these qualities. During his years in Ottawa he earned the respect from members of the House on all sides, including Conservatives. Brant has been given a great opportunity to return Mr. Amand to parliament to fight for our county, our city, and our democracy. Indeed, if Canada is lucky enough to return 155 other MP's of Lloyd's quality to the House then maybe once again Canada can have the democracy it both needs and deserves.
