Calgary Centre-North Recommendation: Stephen Randall (LIB) 19 Replies

As much as I'd like to see a Green candidate win, there's just no way it's happening in this election.  Heck, even the NDP are considered far too radical in almost all of Alberta.  This leaves us…Continue

Heather Macintosh (Green Party) also has a definite chance. Liberals? Umm.. no. NDP - Jack shot every Albertan NDP candidate in the foot (or butt). Green? They only other choice!

Conservative seats in Calgary...not all are safe 9 Replies

It seems to me that there are a few conservative/reform seats that could be contested and possibly won, if the right candidate goes after them. Certainly Rob Anders seat shouldn''t be secure..unless…Continue

Remember what Harper said, "Just give me a majority government and in a few years you won't recognize Canada." Normally I really like to be right but, in this case, I really hope I am wrong about what Harper will do to make our country "unrecognizable".

I feel really disheartened. Maybe I just live in the wrong country/province and need to move to Scandinavia -- or even BC, where I won't feel like a total stranger in my own land.

It did, Andrew. It truly did suck. However, now we have five years to build something more and, of course, a provincial election coming up in the next year.

Is anyone interested in beating out the provincial Tories?

Well that sucked.

"Canada Watches its Democracy Erode":  Someone in Australia has gone to the trouble of cataloguing the (known) sins against democracy committed by Harpo, et. al.  Could serve as a memory aid when talking to those still inclined to vote for more contempt of Parliament.  See  http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/canada-watches-its-democ...

We are a group of Canadians, who were born and raised in Calgary, but now living in other Canadian cities. We are starting a national awareness campaign, focusing on the riding of Calgary South West, that shows how voter turn out can make all the difference.

Last election (2008) had the lowest voter turnout in Canadian history.

42.2% of eligible voters did not vote in 2008.

Harper won with only 37.6% of the popular vote.

Stephen Harper's riding of Calgary SouthWest is the microcosm imitating the macrocosm in that roughly only half of eligible voters turned out to vote and 70% of them voted for Harper.

Imagine if all previous non-voters in Calgary SouthWest came out to vote on May 2nd and unseated Harper!

We've just started a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=205439429479986

Thank you Catch 22, and all those participating in this election. We look forward to working with you all to create a vision for Canada without Stephen Harper.

Vincent St. Pierre writes:

"I believe the two more susceptible ridings to unseating the Tories in Calgary are Calgary East and Calgary Centre-North, and both by the Liberal candidates there.   Firstly, none of the candidates from other parties in this campaign are running actual campaigns. Only the Liberals seem to be putting forward a voice in Calgary."

Hi Vincent,

I must disagree. Green candidate Heather MacIntosh has been door-knocking and doing media interviews for weeks. The Calgary Centre North Greens have been putting up signs all around the riding. Scripts are written and videotaping is going ahead for a brilliant series of "Mac vs. PC" videos.

Furthermore, the Calgary Centre North Green Party came in third place in 2008,  only 20 votes behind popular NDP candidate John Chan, who isn't running this time.

Heather is an excellent candidate, and the Greens have momentum both nationally and in this riding.  Check her out at http://www.heathermacintosh.ca/

Tom Flanagan was quoted by the Calgary Herald as saying that Calgary East is "one of the weaker" ridings for the Tories. I've officially offered my support to the Liberal candidate Josipa Petrunic  (http://www.josipapetrunic.ca/) by requesting a lawn sign, donating money and offering to volunteer. I would encourage anyone else in the Calgary East riding to join me -- I believe that Josipa has the best chance to win of any of the non-Con candidates.

FYI, I sent an email to her about something on her website and received a personal reply from her the NEXT day!!! Wow!!!

See how each individual polling station voted in each riding:

http://www.cyberpresse.ca/actualites/elections-federales/canada-2008/

Notice:

Calgary North East, many voted liberal.  -seems most susceptible

Calgary Centre North, one NDP station, one green.

Calgary West, one liberal station.

The rest of the ridings are completely blue.

Last 2 elections in Macleod Riding (includes south end of Calgary) we organized a forum to ask candidates to respond to questions from Council of Cdns.Tory didn't like but could not say it was oppositon sponsored.
Comment by Bob Morgan on April 9, 2011 at 3:37am
Obhrai's reason at this time for not attending is that it is a Liberal sponsored event therefore partisan.  I phoned Obhrai's campaign office on this and pointed out that all the other candidates that have accepted are competing with the Liberals as well as each others  but the "partisan nature" of the event has not stopped them from attending.
