Dear Catch 22 supporters,

First, let me wish everyone a great summer! I hope you get some quality downtime to recharge your batteries for the challenges ahead...

Catch 22 Harper Conservatives is alive and well, though most of our recent work has been behind-the-scenes. Since our last update, our core campaign team has met several times, and I've had a few meetings with supporters in Catch 22 ridings.

Overall, our campaign continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace than we had originally expected. We now have about 600 people in our nation-wide base, including at least 30 people who have volunteered to help out.

Core team and advisory group

I am very pleased to welcome Nick Fillmore to our core campaign team (which presently includes Nick, Michael Vaillancourt and myself). Nick brings a wealth of experience to the campaign – as a journalist and as an activist for human rights and a free media. Nick has already provided invaluable advice and assistance, such as coordinating the production of our campaign FAQ.

Michael, Nick and I met recently with Murray Dobbin while he was visiting Toronto (Murray has been advising the campaign throughout.) We had a fruitful discussion, and decided to establish a formal “advisory group” of knowledgable and respected individuals to lend strategic advice and credibility to the campaign. We are in the process of identifying advisors, so if you have any suggestions please contact us.

Local campaigns

We are now at the stage where we are ready to launch our local campaigns. If you are interested in taking a lead co-ordinating role in one of our Catch 22 ridings, or otherwise getting involved in a local campaign, please contact us.

I was in Vancouver last month attending a union convention, and I while I was there I met with Catch 22 supporters from North Vancouver and Vancouver Island North.

In North Vancouver, I met with Masrour, Cindy and Nancy and we had a great discussion over lunch. Among other things, we discussed the local media opportunities that we can utilise to give Catch 22 some exposure in our bid to dump Andrew Saxton.

In Nanaimo, I met with Ernie and Michael, who are working on a grassroots voter registration and “pledge” campaign to help send John Duncan packing.

We are hosting a meeting for GTA supporters on Wednesday, July 28, 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., 31 Wellesley St. East, across from the Wellesley subway station (agenda to follow). If you are interested in learning more about the campaign, or wish to volunteer your talents, please join us!

Help!

Please help us promote the campaign by finding at least one other person to join our website or Facebook page. You can send out your own promotional email or use the handy “invite” tool that’s found on our website. You can also follow us on Twitter.

Finally, I’d like to express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has provided time and input into the campaign. Despite the challenges in developing the campaign, I am encouraged by your feedback and volunteer offers (even if we haven’t been able to put all of you to work yet).

Sincerely

Gary Shaul
